Folders, filters & auto-reply
Folders
Every mailbox has built-in folders — Inbox, Sent, Junk (see below) and Trash — plus a Starred view (see Reading mail). Anyone with access to a mailbox can add, rename or delete a custom folder for it — the same access that lets you read the mailbox, not only your account owner or domain manager. Add one with the New folder… box at the bottom of that mailbox's folder list (the sidebar on a wider screen, or the folder switcher button above your messages on a phone). To rename or delete one, open the ⋮ next to that folder in the same list and choose Save after editing its name, or Delete folder. Deleting a folder never deletes its messages — they move back to Inbox, or to Sent for ones you sent from there — only the folder itself goes away. The built-in folders (Inbox, Sent, Junk, Trash) can't be renamed or deleted.
Junk
If this instance has spam checking turned on for a domain, SendGrid scores each inbound message. A message scoring at or above the configured threshold (5.0 by default) goes to Junk instead of Inbox, and doesn't trigger a push notification — everything else about it (search, filters, download) works the same as any other folder. If a message has no score at all, it's always delivered to Inbox, never dropped. Open a message in Junk and select Not junk (Inbox) to move it back — from the ⋮ menu on its row, or the Move to button while reading it.
Filters
Open a mailbox and select the filter icon in the header to see and add its filters. Each filter is applied to every message as it arrives, and you can have as many as you like, in the order they're listed here (oldest first) — every filter that matches runs, not just the first one. If two filters both match the same message, every one of their actions happens, in that order — including Star and Mark read, which just stack. For Move to folder and Move to Trash, the last matching filter decides where the message ends up (an earlier move isn't "final" — a later filter can still move it again). A filter is:
- If a field (From, To, Subject, or Body) contains some text
you type in, then:
- Move to folder — moves the message into a folder (type its name).
- Forward to — sends a copy to another address (type it).
- Star — stars the message.
- Mark read — marks it read on arrival.
- Move to Trash — sends it straight to Trash.
Select the small × icon next to a filter to delete it. If a forwarding filter fails to send, the filter list shows the error so you know mail isn't quietly being dropped.
Signatures
A mailbox can have its own signature, used instead of the sender's personal one for anything sent from that address — see Signatures.
Auto-reply
In the same filter panel, turn on Reply automatically to new senders to send an automatic message (your own subject and body) the first time someone new writes to that mailbox. It won't reply to the same sender more than once a day, so it can't get stuck in a back-and-forth loop with another auto-responder. If a reply fails to send, that's shown here too.
